We are focused on the Sterling, VA CWA for future convective initiation. Currently, skies are mostly clear allowing for ample daytime heating. This is first evident in the comparison of the 12Z KIAD Sounding with the 17Z NUCAPS Sounding (shown above)...with the NUCAPS sounding showing a well-mixed layer and plenty of available energy for convective development. Additionally, the LAPS data is showing increasing instability in this area with CAPE values reaching 1000 J/kg, LI values nearing -5 and TPW in excess of 1.0". Below is an animation showing the increasing instability within the LAPS data.
