DSS in a Moderate Risk

The shows must go on, even when the Storm Prediction Center issues a Moderate Risk for sig-severe large hail, sig-severe damaging wind, and the possibility of strong tornadoes (Figure 1). In La Crosse, WI there is "RiverFest" currently going on (red point "J" in Figure 2). Despite these storm going up fast, LightningCast is still able to anticipate them, as we see quickly growing LightningCast probabilities to the southwest of La Crosse. In very unstable environments, it is definitely advised to use LightningCast output from the 1-min ABI mesoscale sectors.

Figure 2: LightningCast contours, GOES-16 GLM flash-extent density (blues), and GOES-16 ABI day cloud convection RGB. The red point "J" is the location of the RiverFest, with 5-mile and 10-mile range rings around it.
