Update on AzShear in MRMS and ProbSevere

Erroneous strobes of high MRMS AzShear have been spotted today numerous times (e.g., Figure 1). Occasionally, this causes an artificial increase in ProbWind/ProbTor. The good news is that there is a new quality-control method to remove these and other artifacts in AzShear (and thus rotation tracks) that will be implemented in MRMS v12. This will help the accuracy of downstream products in MRMS like rotation tracks and ProbSevere.

Figure 1: The strobe of light blue 0-2km AzShear (>0.02 sec^-1) is a spurious artifact that should be mitigated in MRMS v12, helping ProbSevere and MRMS rotation tracks.
