NUCAPS Planviews
Overall, the NUCAPS planview maps would be beneficial in the forecasting environment as added temperature data would be available inbetween standard upper-air launches. This could serve as a good proxy to help judge the strength of a capping inversion, while also possibly serving as an additional information source during winter wx events. Is there a way to interpolate between QC-flagged data?

ReplyDeleteCurrently, this product only contains the highest quality soundings from NUCAPS. As you have seen, this leaves gaps in the data that limits the utility of the products. There is an intermediate quality flag that labels soundings as good, but still contains useful signal that we can try to include and likely will not lead to major discontinuities in the data. Later this morning, we are going to generate a complementary picture of this case in this post including the "good" soundings. We will see if we can add it to the blog or may share via e-mail.
I wasn't able to figure out how to post images to the blog, so I made a post on our Wide World of SPoRT blog that shows some of the potential for including the "good" soundings.
